New record for most travelers screened at US airports set ahead of Memorial Day

The summer travel season is officially here as millions of people take to the roads and skies for Memorial Day weekend.

The Transportation Security Administration said Saturday that a new record for most travelers screened in a single day has been set.

On Friday, 2.951 million travelers were screened at airports around the country, surpassing the previous record of 2.908 million on Nov. 26, 2023.

TSA Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day!" TSA said in a tweet. "We recommend arriving early."

The third busiest travel day was on Thursday, with 2.897 million, while the fourth was June 30, 2023, with 2.884 million.

AAA is projecting around 43.8 million people will be traveling this year for Memorial Day, which would be a 4% increase over last year. It would come close to breaking 2005's record of 44 million holiday travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”
