Known to the world as the Machine Gun Preacher, Sam Childers is finally back in America from his now home of Uganda. He wasn’t able to come back earlier due to coronavirus. He still has big plans for the future.
Coronavirus has rocked the world but Childers, Vice President of Angel’s of East Africa, was able to make it back to the U.S. after experiencing an extreme lock down in Uganda.
Childers traveled to East Africa for the first time over 20 years ago on a mission trip, which changed his life and the world.
"I probably did what most people would have done. I got in the middle of a civil war and had to pick up a firearm in order to save children. However, I probably did what most people wouldn’t have. I never left. I stayed there." - says Childers
Since his first trip, Childers started Angeles of East Africa, a non-profit organization that helps orphaned children. It has expanded across the world.
The organizations also teaches skills and trades, from a commercial farm to hotels and restaurants. About 500 people work a day. Childers says there is still much work that needs to be done.
"As American’s, we have to count our blessings one by one. Where I live now, there is no help." - said Childers
For the past 12 years, the organization has hosted a charity ride every July, but due to coronavirus they had to postpone. The three day event will take place from August 21st - 23rd, with many activities planned. Every year they choose someone from the community in need and the other 90 percent of the proceeds goes to East Africa. Social distancing and safety will be recommended.
This upcoming Sunday, Childers will be speaking at Three C’s church, which is on the campground owned by Angels of East Africa. The service will be held outside with social distancing enforced.
"I believe the summer kind of got shot for everyone. Everyone lost a summer of fun. However, I believe it’s not too late to still have that fun." says Childers
