Penn Highlands Health announces expansion into State College area

The State College area is getting a new hospital in the coming months as Penn Highlands expands into Centre County.

This will be Penn Highlands ninth hospital in the state. They currently have six locations in our coverage area and are now expanding to State College.

Representatives from the hospital say that construction will be finished in late spring and that they are planning to open this coming summer.

The hospital will be located on Colonnade Boulevard, right behind the Sheetz and next to Kohl’s.

Officials say they are planning on getting the hospital accredited as a level four trauma center.

Dave Trudell is the marketing director for Penn Highlands Healthcare and says that the hospital will have technology that isn’t currently in the area.

“The big thing is what we can provide care for here in the area or will be able to provide care for which is general surgery, orthopedics, heart care, lung care. In fact, with lung care we’ll probably be the only hospital in the greater area to have two different diagnostic robots for lung treatment.”

Officials say construction of the seventy-million-dollar State College hospital started in February of 2022. Representatives say there will be over two-hundred workers employed and thirty to forty physicians when they open.

The three-floor facility will also feature an emergency department, a surgical department, and eighteen private inpatient rooms.

Officials say that there will be a medical office building connected to the hospital which will include a walk-in clinic, cancer center, lung and heart centers and more.

Rhonda Halstead is the central region market president for Penn Highlands Healthcare and talked about how they are trying to stand out from the competition.

“I think we are going to do a little bit of a twist on healthcare and we’re going to be a boutique hospital that offers every element of healthcare, so there’s nothing that you can’t get when you come here to Penn Highlands State College.”

While the hospital won’t be as big as Mount Nittany Medical Center, officials say it will give patients from the State College area another option.
