FORT MYERS, Fla. (WPEC) — Parts of South Florida are picking up the pieces after a tornado touched down Sunday as part of a strong Southeast winter storm.
The National Weather Service confirms the tornado struck Lee County, leaving thousands without power and over 100 homes damaged. Video captured from College Pkwy in Fort Myers shows a tornado moving through the community early Sunday.
A Facebook post from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office showed damage at a 7-Eleven in Spring Hill.
In Clearwater, the storms caused portions of stucco to fall off the Bank of America building and into the streets below, according to police.
Collier County saw at least one tornado, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of customers were without power Sunday in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
After lashing the South, the storm was expected to bring frigid and snowy conditions to the Northeast. New York City was expected to be spared from most, if not all, of the snowfall, but Long Island and Connecticut coastal areas were expecting gale conditions.
