WASHINGTON (TND) — Select cream cheese spreads sold at Aldi and Hy-Vee have been recalled in several states due to a potential risk for salmonella.
Schreiber Foods issued a news release on May 7 saying it was informed by one of their suppliers that "an ingredient used in several cream cheese spread formulas has the potential to contain Salmonella."
The company reported no cases of illnesses related to the incident have been reported so far.
Customers who have purchased the items were advised to throw the product away or return to the store for a full refund.
The following products were recalled at Aldi: Happy Farms Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, Chive & Onion Cream Cheese Spread, Cream Cheese Spread and Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread.
The affected products were sold at select Aldi stores including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Hy-Vee is recalling two types of Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread as well as the bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream Mix.
The products were distributed to Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore and Dollar Fresh Market locations as well as Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores located in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The salmonella bacteria can be fatal for young children, the elderly, the frail and those with weakened immune systems. Even healthy people can suffer strong symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, as well as potentially bloody diarrhea.
