CORRY, PA — With the death of Pennsylvania State Trooper Jacques Rougeau, who was killed in the line of duty, community members are remembering the impactful life he lived.
“It’s sad and tragic that at such a young age he was taken, but definitely the time that he was with us, he left an impression that will never go away,” said Chad Sutton, Rougeau’s high school basketball coach.
Role model, caring, compassionate, and selfless are just a few of the words those who knew him have described him as.
“He was going to help you out regardless of what it took and he was going to do it with a smile,” Sutton said. “He pretty much epitomized the type of person you would want to be watching over you when you are asleep at night.”
Sutton said being a State Trooper was a goal of Rougeau’s, and was one he accomplished. This month would have marked there years with PSP.
“He was a role model to people in the Corry community,” said Richard Shopene, the former Corry Police Chief.
In 2014, Rougeau interned with the Corry Police Department.
“He was drawn to law enforcement because he wanted to help people,” Shopene said. “He had a personality that just drew people to him, he had a smile that would light up a room , he would be a friend to someone who didn’t have a friend.”
Prior to assignment at Troop G, Lewistown, Trooper Rougeau served as a Patrol Unit member at York from the time of his Academy graduation until March 2023.
In a statement, York’s Station Commander. LT. Joseph Spingler said,” The Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, York Station, mourns the loss of our brother, Trooper Jacques Rougeau.
The statement continued to say, “Trooper Rougeau’s approach to law enforcement was through a lens of selfless service, approaching every shift with humility and humor. An injection of positivity was present wherever he went, regardless of situation. This “others before self” mindset was an inspiration and will continue to be a daily reminder of why we wear the grey. Godspeed Jacques. We will always continue to answer the call, for you and all those before who did not swerve from the path of duty.”
