Beating the heat at local Johnstown recreation center

We have a very hot weekend ahead and some in our area found themselves enjoying the weather outside today instead of being stuck in the office.

Local parks and swimming pools were full of people trying to enjoy the heat while staying hydrated.

Angel Schropp, a Windber resident told Channel 6, “I got sweat running down everywhere, I don’t like it, its gross.”

And Angel Schropp is not the only one on this mid eighty degree day.

Rebekah Walter shared with Channel 6, “The kids love summer. We try to take advantage of all we can outside. Its really just keeping the kids safe in the heat as much as possible, taking breaks and stuff but we love summer.”

As fun as summer can be, according to an article by Penn State Extension becoming dehydrated is more common during summertime than any other time of the year because of the increase in outdoor activities.

Walter's says “I worry about the kids dehydrating a lot so water, we just drink water. Water, water, water constantly.”

Schropp told WJAC, “if you're seeing me walking or out with the kids I usually have my colder bag. I got water, Gatorade with the extra electrolytes to stay hydrated, ice packs and usually an ice cream trip afterwards.”

Signs of dehydration can be dizziness, fatigue or dry eyes, lips and mouth.

Keeping cool in the pool or shade is always important when outside trying to stay hydrated.

“Well be swimming, so at least we will have some refreshing cool water, but on a normal day where we don’t have that opportunity to swim, its an inside day.”

The Windber Recreation Pool was filling up quick just after doors opened to the public.

Eryn marsh work at the recreation center and says, "It's a hot one, it is but the kids keep me cool, they do

As Caitlin said earlier, tomorrow is yet again another hot day, stay cool and hydrated.
